Using NAS Sync

Everything from installing to moving your license to a new Mac. Can't find an answer? Email us at support@nas-sync.com.

Requirements

  • A Mac with macOS 13 Ventura or later, Apple silicon or Intel.
  • For NAS Mount and Obsidian Sync: a NAS or server that shares folders over SMB (Synology, QNAP, TrueNAS, Unraid, a Windows PC and others).
  • For Obsidian Sync: iCloud Drive turned on, and an Obsidian vault in iCloud Drive → Obsidian (create one in Obsidian on your iPhone or iPad).
  • For File Sync without a NAS: any USB, Thunderbolt or internal drive.

Install

  1. Open NAS Sync.dmg and double-click NAS Sync Setup.
  2. Choose What to Use: tick NAS Mount, Obsidian Sync and File Sync as you like. Obsidian Sync needs NAS Mount. Steps for parts you leave off are skipped.
  3. NAS Connection: enter your NAS address (for example 192.168.1.5 or nas.local) and your NAS username, then click Sign In. macOS's own window asks for the password; tick Remember this password in my keychain.
  4. Shares to Mount: tick shares, or click Choose Folders… to pick folders inside a share in Finder. Click Mount Selected.
  5. Obsidian Vault: pick your vault and the NAS folder that mirrors it. If both already have notes, choose which side wins the first sync; the other side is backed up first.
  6. Schedule and Permissions, then Install. Setup runs a real background test and tells you if macOS needs anything allowed.

Permissions

macOS asks you to allow a few things. Setup checks each one and links you to the right place in System Settings.

PermissionWhyWhere
NotificationsAlerts when a share is missing or a sync fails.System Settings → Notifications → NAS Sync
Full Disk AccessLets NAS Sync Agent, the background helper, read iCloud Drive and your synced folders while the app is closed.Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access → NAS Sync Agent

NAS Sync → Settings → Permissions shows all of them, checked live, with a Fix button for anything that's blocked.

NAS Mount

  • Click + on the NAS Mount page to add a share, a folder inside one, or a share on another NAS.
  • Click a share for Open Folder, Unmount, Remount and Remove from List. A share you unmount stays unmounted until you choose Mount.
  • Change how often shares are checked from the Schedule menu, from every minute to every 24 hours.

File Sync

  • Click + on the File Sync page. Choose a Mac folder or a cloud drive preset, then a destination on the NAS or on a drive attached to your Mac.
  • Two-way keeps both sides the same. One-way copies in one direction; turn on Keep files deleted on the source to keep a full archive.
  • Two pairs can share a NAS folder only when neither deletes files there.

Fill & Spill

  1. Add a cloud drive with File Sync's +, then turn on Fill & Spill and enter your plan size and how much to keep free.
  2. NAS Sync shows which files would spill before anything moves. Confirm to turn it on.
  3. When the drive is fuller than your limit, its oldest files move to the NAS until there's room again. Show Spilled Files lists everything that moved.

The switch on each drive pauses Fill & Spill but keeps its settings. Configure → Remove turns it off completely.

Obsidian Sync

  • Syncs on your schedule and seconds after you save on the Mac. Open the vault in iCloud Drive on Mac, iPhone and iPad, and the NAS folder on Windows.
  • If the same note changed on both sides, the newer one wins and the older one is kept as a conflict copy. Resolve… compares them side by side.
  • History keeps overwritten and deleted notes for 30 days.
  • The optional NAS Sync Status plugin (Settings → Obsidian) shows sync status in Obsidian's status bar.

Your license

  • The trial lasts 14 days. NAS Sync shows the days left in its window, in Settings → License and in the menu bar.
  • After buying, your key arrives by email. Enter it in Settings → License and click Activate. That needs the internet once; after that NAS Sync works offline.
  • Your license covers all of your own Macs. Moving to a new Mac? Click Deactivate This Mac on the old one first, or uninstall NAS Sync there, which does the same.
  • If the trial ends before you enter a key, mounting and syncing pause. Nothing is deleted.

Uninstall

Open NAS Sync.dmg and double-click Uninstall NAS Sync. It stops the schedules, releases your license on this Mac and moves NAS Sync's apps, settings, logs and widgets into one folder in the Trash. Your notes, your synced folders and the files on your NAS stay where they are.

Troubleshooting

  • A share won't mount. Check the NAS is on and reachable, then click the share → Remount. If the password changed, click Sign In… in NAS Sync → Settings → NAS.
  • A sync is paused for safety. Open the page with the banner and review the changes. Continue if they're expected; otherwise restore from History.
  • Background access is blocked. Settings → Permissions shows which one and has a Fix button.
  • Logs are in ~/Library/Logs/NAS Sync, and View Log on each page opens them.
